'Speedos' Brand Turns 50

In 1961, Australian designer Peter Travis invented the beloved skimpy "Speedo."  Travis says the crucial thing was to position the briefs on the hips, not the waist. He also cut the fabric on the side of the hips to just 5 cm deep. The design on the left was one of the original designs.

A bit odd by our standards today, but the design was a huge hit with beach-goers in the 60s. 

My personal favorite Speedo-brand speedo design was the one that had the word 'Speedo' in big lettering right across the ass cheek area.  To me, nothing was more eye-catching on a warm summer afternoon at the pool or beach than bold white lettering proclaiming - "Speedo" - across two nicely shaped butt cheeks.You know the one I mean!

To mark the coming of this anniversary for Speedo, I am going to be spending some time posting some speedo pictures along with links to great sites all over the Internet where you can find speedo pictures, speedos to purchase, and more.

Today, Speedo brand has lots of competition in fashion swimwear, so not every bikini-cut men's swim suit = a "Speedo" brand speedo.  Nevertheless, the word speedo has become so synonymous with a particular style of men's swimwear that many different brands will be included.
